The brutality of the Vietnam War captured in harrowing images

LIFE magazine war photographer, Larry Burrows, covered the fighting on the front lines during the Vietnam War and is now being remembered for his extraordinary work as the 41 year anniversary of his death approaches.
Mr Burrows captured the compelling images of Operation Prairie, the U.S. offensive against the North Vietnamese near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), that lasted from August 3 to October 27, 1966.

  3. Gruesome? How about those untold deaths of more than 3.5 million Vietnamese? Where were their stories? Where were their gruesome images? Mylai was just a tip of the iceberg.

  4. Gee from this propaganda display you'd think it was just the Americans that did all the suffering in Vietnam. You'd never know that millions of Vietnamese innocents were murdered, maimed, wounded, poisoned, had their livelihoods and culture destroyed by the Americans. Not to mention the massive environmental damage the US wrought in Vietnam, some 1/7 of the land destroyed by US chemical warfare.

  8. The men and women served with honor, more for each other than their country. You ask what we learned? Look at the photo of the white soldier extending his hand to the black one. It is the first time we actually understood that we all bleed red. Those men brought back true freedom in their hearts which lead to the end of segregation. We as a people welcomed them back with name calling. Our government may be to blame but our soldiers serve with honor.

  9. I'm sure you all are much happier with Nuclear North Korea supported by China, as Vietnam was that has missles that can hit the United States & and a nuclear Iran being supported by Russia, who's missles can reach Europe & Isreal. The only thing we did wrong in Vietnam was to use convential war, the same mistake we made in Iraq & Afganistan. All of those wars would have been over in a day with one strategically placed nuke and 10's of thousands of American lives would not have been lost. WAKE THE F.... UP The only reason you have the freedom to spread this garbage propaganda, is because American heros gave there lives for you to do so. If your not proud to be an Ametican, please feel free to move to Vietnam, North Korea, China, Russia, Afganistan or Iran. I am positive you will be much happier living in a dictator regime.
